    The probe has a bad cord.  The main unit does not operate without the probe.
    I did witness the main unit working,  right up until I accidentally severed one of the cord wires.  The rubber around the wires has hardened and started flaking off.
    Although the main unit is operational,  it hasn't been calibrated since the year 2000.
