    Description

    Autographed 3 bar musical quotation from his most famous work, the opera, "Four Saints in 3 Acts".  Offered with a vintage press photograph of the composer suitable for display.
    Thomson's ground breaking work with a libretto by Gertrude Stein was written between 1927 and 1928 and first performed in Hartford Connecticut in February, 1934 and staged later that month on Broadway.  The line "To know her, to love her so" is one of the most enduring of the opera.
    From a collection of cards by composers and other luminaries in the performing arts dedicated to a young Vassar College student upon her graduation.  Her Mother Alice Swanson Esty was a soprano and commissioned numerous works from Les Six, other French, as well as American composers.  From Thomson she commissioned in 1959, the song cycle, “Songs for Alice Esty” with poems by Kenneth Koch.  For the 1964 Poulenc Memorial at Carnegie Hall, she commissioned Thomson’s song “My Crow Pluto” for the occasion.
